Sedation therapy

Dental treatment for nervous patients can be aided by sedation techniques. These will allow our anxieties to be overcome to permit high quality dental care to be carried out.

There are two main types used at this practice:

Oral sedation using a medicine which allows us to relax over a period of around 1-2 hours. This is our preferred choice for mildly anxious patients, but you will need a responsible person to accompany you home and look after you for 24 hours.

Intra-venous sedation is used for more anxious patients and for lengthy or unpleasant procedures for up to 3 - 4 hours. A cannula is inserted into the vein of your arm or the back of your hand and the drug slowly introduced until you feel drowsy and comfortable. The experience is highly pleasurable and you will remember very little, if anything about the procedures we have carried out. You will still need a responsible person to accompany you home and look after you for 24 hours and you must not sign any legal documents for the same 24 hours, nor must you drive a motor vehicle during that period.

With both methods we will carry out a health check before proceeding, and will closely monitor you during the procedure.
